Do you need to renew a California disabled parking permit?

In California, permanent disability parking permits must be renewed every two years, but you are not required to do anything. The DMV will automatically deliver a replacement placard to the address on file every two years (when it expires on June 30 of every odd-numbered year). You will not be required to complete another medical examination. Temporary placards, on the other hand, must be renewed every 180 days (six months) or on the date specified on your application by your registered medical professional. A temporary placard can only be renewed once after six months. A new application and medical certification will be required for a temporary placard.

In California, what are the requirements regarding disabled parking?

Once you get your parking permit, there are certain key guidelines to observe. To begin, always remember to keep your placard visible in your rearview mirror before exiting your vehicle. The placard, however, must not be hung while the vehicle is moving. You may park if you have a valid placard:

Any parking spaces bearing the International Access Symbol (wheelchair symbol)

People with disability parking permits can park next to blue curbs.

You can park next to green curbs at any time - even if they have time limits, you can use your placard to park there for as long as you need.

In metered parking places on the street (for free!)

In regions where a resident or merchant permission is necessary (no permit is required as long as you have your placard)

Even with your placard, parking is still prohibited:

Only persons who require wheelchair and wheelchair lift access should use places with a crosshatched pattern next to the International Symbol of Access.

Stopping, standing, or parking is prohibited near red curbs.

Next to yellow curbs, which are only for loading and unloading commercial vehicles

Next to white curbs that are exclusively used for loading and unloading passengers

You also receive the benefit of service stations being obligated to refuel your vehicle for you, in addition to not having to pay for metered parking. Furthermore, even if you are not pumping your own gas, they must charge you self-service pricing.

You'll be able to travel around lot more easily if you have greater parking access. But keep in mind that you are the only one authorized to use your placard. You are not permitted to lend your placard to friends or family members. You must be in the vehicle (whether you're the driver or merely a passenger) if your placard is being utilized. Abusing your placard privilege could result in your permit being removed permanently, as well as further penalties (such as fines or other punishments).
